Smart biomedical products are the future
- Society demands higher standards of care and safety
- All western countries face a tightening of health system budgets
- Higher treatment costs due to an aging population
- Difficulty in finding trained medical personnel
- Home based treatment is a much more attractive solution
21st century biomedical sensors
- Biomedical sensor technology has advanced significantly over the last decade
- Lower cost and high performance sensors now available
- Contactless biomedical sensors are no longer science fiction!
Challenges with Gait analysis
- Human motion tracked by multiple cameras (typically 5-12 cameras) and markers (reflective balls) attached to body. Big disadvantage, as setup is complicated and expensive
- Ambient lighting affects camera performance – less so with IR cameras
- Not suitable for home use (multiple cameras are expensive, one camera would be ideal)
- Establishing perspective of subject is essential angular joint tracking. New developments include: 2.5D depth based camera sensors
- Locomotion/gait patterns established by data from pressure mats – system limited to test mat areas. New developments include: wireless sensors with pressure sensors in shoes
- IMU sensor drift (dead reckoning): leads to errors in 3D position estimation
Typical lab based Gait analysis setup
with cameras and pressure mats
ASN human motion tracking technology
Contactless motion tracking sensor
state-of-the-art radar technology
Robust tracking
Radar works well in all lighting and weather conditions and is immune to EM interference – a big plus over IMU sensors
Real-time 2D tracking
radar modules track multiple human movement with a 5cm accuracy.
Correct IMU drift (dead reckoning
high immunity to EM interference and multipath mean that the tracker operate in robust environments, providing corrections to the IMU sensor fusion algorithm and associated quaternion rotation matrix equations.
Robust human vital life signs tracking
ignores effects of furniture and high immunity to multipath
High sensitivity
allowing for detection of the smallest changes, e.g: gesture movement, respiration and heart rate from adults, children and babies from several metres away
Penetrates walls, doors and clothes
tracking modules can be placed behind a wall – ideal for home use!
Ultra-safe technology
no detrimental effects on human health
Benefits
Contactless real-time 2D human motion tracking
- Motion capturing (analysis of Gait or other human movement)
- IMU sensor drift correction
- Location/orientation tracker: ideals for exercises
- Personnel tracker within living space (living room, bedroom, kitchen)
Gesture tracking
- hand and arm movement: controlling house hold appliances
VLS (vital life signs): Heartbeat and respiration measurement
- Elderly patients with heart problems and dementia
- Tracking sleep patterns
- Hospital intensive care (premature babies and burns patients)
- Personnel safety: ideal for personnel working in dangerous environments (e.g. chemicals)
